German Aerospace Center (DLR) Linder Höhe, 51147 Cologne, Germany, Building 51, Institute of Materials Research (Gebäude 51, meeting point)
DLR is the national aeronautics and space research centre of the Federal Republic of Germany. Its extensive research and development work in aeronautics, space, energy, transport and security is integrated into national and international cooperative ventures. In addition to its own research, as Germany’s space agency, DLR has been given responsibility by the federal government for the planning and implementation of the German space programme. DLR is also the umbrella organization for the nation’s largest project management agency. For more information click here.
Access to the DLR Cologne Premise
In order to enter the DLR premises, please come to the North entrance. The North entrance is the main entrance. It is important that you note that the North entrance of DLR is located in street “Planitzweg“. This might be very confusing, because it deviates from the official address “Linder Hoehe”. So, if you do not want to find yourself in the middle of nowhere, please note that you must come to “Planitzweg”. It is easy, if you simply follow the road signs to DLR, but difficult, if you have a navigation system. In the latter case, enter “Planitzweg”.
Please note: Special security and export law regulations apply to visits of the DLR facility. Once arrived at the entrance, you are kindly asked to register at the guard-house. The officers should have your name on the list of visitors already. However, you still need to show your valid passport to them. Without passport entering DLR site will be refused. When you receive your day batch, please wear the batch visibly.
The DLR Cologne is located to the south-east of Cologne, close to the Cologne-Bonn airport.
Arrival by Train
The local trains (“S-Bahn”) S 12 or S 13 leave from the Cologne Central Station (Köln Hauptbahnhof (Hbf)), Siegburg and Troisdorf. S 13 also leaves from the Cologne-Bonn Airport. Daytime departures take place every 20 min for both trains so that there is a train every 10 minutes. Get off at railway station “Porz-Wahn” and continue from there by KVB bus number 162, direction “DLR”. See instructions “By bus” below.
Note: Make sure that you have a valid ticket. Tickets for local train routes must be purchased in advance. If you need a ticket, you can get one from the ticket machines.
Arrival by Bus
To get to the DLR Cologne by bus, take the KVB bus number 162 from “Porz-Wahn”. The bus sign will show “DLR”. Exit at the last stop and you have arrived at the main gate of the German Aerospace Center (DLR Köln).
Arrival by Taxi
Upon arrival to the Cologne Central Station (Köln Hauptbahnhof (Hbf)) take a taxi to “Porz-Wahnheide, DLR”. Taxi stands are located on both, the north and south exit of the station. Taxis are available almost everywhere in Cologne. However, if you can’t find one, you can call Tel. 19410 and ask to be picked up. Tell the driver to take you to “Porz-Wahnheide, DLR”. The price will very much depend on daytime and traffic.
Arrival by Car
Have a look at the map displayed below: Arriving from Frankfurt (A3) or from Bonn (A59): follow the indications to “Köln Bonn Airport (A59)” until the exit “Porz-Wahn/Wahnheide”. At the exit take the right (“Porz-Wahnheide”) and follow the DLR sign.
Arriving from Cologne (A59) or Oberhausen/Düsseldorf (A3): follow the indications to “Köln/Bonn Airport (A59)”, then do not exit at the interchange “Flughafen Köln/Bonn” but take the next exit “Porz-Wahn/Wahnheide”. At the exit drive left (“Porz-Wahnheide”) and follow the DLR sign.
Important Note: If you use a navigation system, enter your destination as “Planitzweg” instead of Linder Höhe. This will take you to the North entrance where you are requested to register. You need your passport for this purpose.
Arrival by Air
You can reach Cologne Bonn Airport (CGN) easily by rail from DLR. The railway station is located at the center of the airport and offers public transport services to DLR Site every 20-30 minutes.
From Düsseldorf Airport (DUS) there are public transport services to Cologne and the conference venue every 30 minutes. Transfer duration is in the range of 60 minutes.
Train connections from Frankfurt Airport (FRA) to Cologne City or Siegburg are provided at 20-45 minutes intervals. Shortest transfer duration is about 1 hour.
Upon arrival to the Cologne/Bonn Airport there’s two possibilities:
- to take a taxi in front of the terminal and ask the driver to take you to “DLR in Porz-Wahnheide”
- to take the local train S 13 direction “Troisdorf” from the railway station “Köln/Bonn Flughafen”, which is located in the basement of the airport, to the station “Porz-Wahn” which is your first stop after boarding the train. Continue from there by KVB bus number 162, direction “DLR”. See also above instructions “By Train” and “By Bus”.
