2nd International Network Meeting of EUSMAT – 2019
The meeting took place from 11th to 15th November 2019 at the Saarland University. Around 40 persons participated of the the different events, which included different meetings, excursions and workshops.
Alumni Meeting
An important and very appreciated part of the event is the presentations done by the alumni of the different study programmes of EUSMAT and also from other German universities. The participants explained how was their period at the university and how they developed their career afterwards. Informal meetings allows for further exchange between the participants.
Everything prepared for the meeting! Presentation of Juhan Lee, AMASE-Alumni, about his career path.
Verónica Collado Ciprés, former AMASE student and currently working at Sandvik Coromant in Sweden. Maria Murcia Valderrama, former AMASE student, presented her steps up to her PhD in The Netherlands.

Workshop: Modern Methods for Microstructure Analysis
This workshop brought together selected world-wide experts in this field to present and discuss about the current trends in these topics together and inspired by PhD students and younger international researchers from different countries.
Prof. Guillermo Requena (RWTH Aachen and German Aerospace Center – DLR, Cologne) and Prof. Claudia Redenbach (TU Keiserlautern). Presentation of Prof. Philipp Slusalleck (DFKI) about Digital Reality. Mike Marsh (Object Research Systems (ORS) Inc., Canada) presenting about deep learning.
The workshop included the following presentations:
Session I: Time resolved imaging
- Francisco García-Moreno (Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin): “X-ray tomoscopy in materials science: Exploring temporal resolution”
- Ehrenfried Zschech (Fraunhofer Institut für Keramische Technologien und Systeme, Dresden): “High-resolution 3D Visualization of Crack Propagation in Multi-component Materials and Structures during Mechanical Loading using X-ray Microscopy”
- Guillermo Requena (RWTH Aachen and German Aerospace Center – DLR, Cologne): “High Resolution 3D and 4D Characterization of Microstructure Formation in Novel Ti Alloys for Additive Manufacturing”
Session II: Computational Microstructure Analysis

- Remco Geurts (Thermofisher, The Netherlands): “Advances in 3D Serial Sectioning & TEM Sample Preparation using a Plasma Focused Ion Beam”
Workshop on International Research Funding
This workshop was conducted by Mr. Jakob Haardt (Eurice GmbH) and Dr. Christian Busch (VDI Technology Transfer). In the first part the speakers presented the financing possibilities within different programs of the BMBF and the EU. For example: Research priorities in the field of New Materials and Chemistry of the BMBF, ERA-NET, International Bilateral Programmes of the BMBF, Horizon 2020, ERC (European Research Council), and Marie Curie Individual Fellowships.
In a second part, some practical aspects related to “How to write a successful proposal” and project management were discussed.
Mr. Jakob Haardt (Eurice GmbH, St. Ingbert) presenting during the workshop on international research funding. Workshop on International Research Funding by Dr. Christian Busch (National Contact Point Nanotechnology, VDI Technologie Transfer GmbH).
Innovation Workshop byBenno van Aeersen
In this exclusive event, Benno van Aerssen dealed with 2 current focal topics: Selection of the right innovation tools and targeted removal of obstacles and Success agent innovation culture and how to produce and promote it.
Both parts of the event consisted of a short keynote lecture and an interactive workshop part. In the well-known style of Benno van Aerssen, the participants worked in an extremely practical manner and receive concrete tools for their further innovation work.
Benno van Aerssen (born 1964) comes from an ancient Italian family of artists and grew up inthe Lower Rhine region. He is a lateral thinker, visionary, innovator, trainer and author with extraordinary creativity, ideas, passion and empathy.
