International Master in Sustainable Materials and Engineering (SuME)
Cooperation with Argentina
Binational master’s program between the Universidad Nacional de Mar del Plata (UNMdP) in Argentina and Saarland University (UdS) in Germany with a focus on “Sustainable Materials and Engineering”.
Students will acquire in-depth knowledge in the development, manufacture, processing, characterization, and application of sustainable materials and systems. The program takes an interdisciplinary approach, integrating content from chemistry, materials science and engineering, and systems engineering. Particular emphasis is placed on the design and integration of sustainable technological processes.
Structure
At Saarland University, the master’s program comprises a total of 120 ECTS credits. Students with a five-year first degree can have up to 30 ECTS credits recognized for courses they have already completed. This allows the program to be shortened by about one semester, which makes it particularly attractive for students from Latin America.
At UNMdP, students must meet the requirements for master’s programs set by CONEAU (Argentine Accreditation Agency): a total of 120 Argentine credits (CRE) (3,000 working hours). Of these, at least 540 hours must be spent in face-to-face classes, including lectures, seminars, and laboratory work. The remaining time is reserved for the master’s thesis and professional practice.
Mobility
UNMdP students complete between 30 and 42 ECTS (corresponding to 36–50 CRE) in Mar del Plata. In September, they attend intensive German language courses in Saarbrücken and take part in an Orientation Week in Saarbrücken in October. From October to March, they complete 30 ECTS (36 CRE) at Saarland University in courses offered by the program. Depending on your interests and funding options, you can write your master’s thesis at Saarland University or at UNMdP.
Saarland University students spend one academic semester at UNMdP, either in the second semester (April–July) or in the third semester (August–December), depending on their individual plans and course selection. The master’s thesis can also be completed at either of the two participating universities.
