Which type of mobility can be supported?

The following mobility activities are supported:

short and longterm mobility for students, long term study mobilities
internships abroad for students (possible also between a BA and a MA and even after you finished your studies as long as you apply on time when you’re still enrolled)
teaching mobility for staff
job shadowing for staff

Every student in Europe – and therefore also at Saarland University – can and is encouraged to go abroad and can apply for financial support. The maximum stay abroad via Erasmus within your studies is 12 months for every study period i.e. 12 for the BA and 12 for the MA. You can also split the stays within one study period, e.g. two times one semester.

If you are a PhD-student or if you are a staff member of Saarland University from the Faculty of Science and Technology, please get directly in touch with the Erasmus coordinator, Dr. Claudia Heß, office@eusmat.net in order to get further information about the mobility support. The following information is primarily intendet for BA and MA students.

Which universities could I go to?

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) at Saarland University has partnerships with different universities in Europe:

Università degli Studi di Padova (Italy)
Politechnika Warszawska (Poland)
Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (Spain)
Montanuniversität Leoben (Austria)
Luleå tekniska universitet (Sweden)

You would like to go to another university

It is also possible to choose a university with which another department of Saarland University has an Erasmus cooperation as long as you check that the university you chose provides studies in Materials Science. You then apply via the departmental coordinator of the other department as “fachfremd”. Information about which cooperation agreements exist between Saarland University and other international universities can be found on the Moveon Database.

Application

All applications for Erasmus stays at our partner universities are handled through EUSMAT office. Your contact person is Dr. Claudia Heß, office@eusmat.net You are very welcome to contact her for any questions about Erasmus or to make an appointment with her even if you are not sure yet if or when you would like to start your stay abroad.

The application deadline for study mobilites is September 15 of the previous year for the summer semester and March 15 of the same year for the winter semester.

The application has to be done via the homepage of our International office. In order to apply, students have to register in Moveon first (This is only the case if you never have been funded via Erasmus from Saarland University before). During the apllication process you will be asked to upload different documents such as

CV
motivation letter
Transcript of records of all examinations completed so far
List of courses attended in the last two semesters
Proof of sufficient language skills for the respective country
health insurance certificate
ID/passport

Who can apply?

Any student enrolled at Saarland University, regardless of nationality, is eligible to apply for an Erasmus scholarship. The maximum funding period is 4 months per semester/8 months per year. It is possible to stay longer then 4/8 months (max. 12) and your stay is covered by your learning agreement but you will not get funding for the additional time (this is called “Zero grant”).

How much is the funding?

The funding you get depends on the country you will go to. For countries in group 1: 600€/month, for countries from group 2 and 3: 540€/month (2026)

Group 1: Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Ireland, Iceland, Italy, Liechtenstein,
Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Austria, Sweden. Partner countries from regions 13 (Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, Vatican City) and 14 (Faroe Islands, Switzerland, United Kingdom).
Group 2: Estonia, Greece, Latvia, Malta, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Czech Republic, Cyprus.
Group 3: Bulgaria, Croatia, Lithuania, North Macedonia (FYROM), Poland, Romania, Serbia, Turkey, Hungary.

Any additional financial support?

Yes, you can get additional support for “Green travelling” and some groups of students can apply for an additional top-up of 250€ per month. The top-up is available for
➔ Students with a disability rated at GdB 20 or higher or with a chronic illness
➔ Students who are spending their time abroad with a child or children
➔ First-generation college students (students from non-academic families)
➔ Working students (salary must have been between €450 and €850 per month for the last six consecutive months prior to the mobility

Intercultural mobility preparation

To help you get the most out of your study abroad experience and use it to further your professional and personal growth, EUSMAT offers intercultural training sessions several times a year. In groups of 10–20 students, you’ll work together to develop your personal intercultural skills and learn how to respond flexibly and constructively to challenges you may face during your time abroad. You will receive a certificate after successfully completing the training.
